What are skills?
A skill is the knowledge and application of technical and professional abilities. We currently support progress against language and subject skills, and are working on expanding this skill library further.
What is skill XP?
Skill XP is a way to visualize and track the different skills you’re progressing within as you complete coursework on the platform.
How do I earn skill XP?
You earn XP by completing content items within courses and paths like lessons, quizzes, and projects. Soon, you will be able to earn skill XP by practicing too (stay tuned!).
How much skill XP does each content item earn?

How were skill XP values determined?
Content item XP values were determined with consideration of how the content item type reflected against the levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy. We also factored the time and effort it takes to complete each content item type.
How much skill XP do I need to achieve beginner or intermediate proficiency?
Skill XP reflects your progress in skill areas based off the coursework you complete. Soon this will account for time spent practicing too. The greater your skill XP is, the more learning material you’ve been exposed to and successfully completed.
We haven’t yet specified which thresholds represent different levels of proficiency, but we’re excited to build that soon.
How can I share my skills?
We’re working on building a way for you to share your skill XP. For now, you can demonstrate your Codecademy achievements with others by sharing your badges and certificates. Badges and certificates are located on your profile page.
How do I reset my skill XP?
You can reset your skill XP by resetting progress for individual courses, paths, and exercises. Read more about how to reset your progress here.
Can I lose skill XP?
You can only lose skill XP if you reset progress for courses, paths, and exercises.
