If you're new to Codecademy, you may be wondering about the different types of tests you'll encounter throughout your learning journey. Here's a breakdown of the three main types of assessments on Codecademy: quizzes, assessments, and exams.
Quizzes
Quizzes are short, low-stakes assessments designed to test your understanding of a specific concept or topic. They usually consist of a few multiple-choice or true/false questions and can be completed quickly. Quizzes are often included after lessons to help learners check their understanding before moving on to the next section.
- Feel free to retake quizzes as many times as you like
- Quizzes count toward your course progress in order to receive a Certificate of Completion
- The passing score is 70% or higher
Assessments
Assessments are more comprehensive than quizzes and are designed to test your knowledge of an entire course or track. They often consist of a mix of multiple-choice, true/false, and coding questions and may be timed. Assessments help gauge the level of knowledge within a topic, but will not grant a certificate.
- Assessments are encouraged but not required
- Unlike with quizzes, you won't be able to see which questions you get wrong
- Assessments do not count toward your course completion progress
- You may retake assessments within 24 hour
- Assessments are included in career paths
- The passing score is 70% or higher
Exams
Exams are similar to assessments in that they are comprehensive and test your knowledge of an entire course or track. Generally, you can expect two parts (part 1 & part 2) on exams. Part 1 will be multiple choice questions. Part 2 will be executable code questions where you will submit your code and we will check it. Please note:
- You will need to pass all exams to earn your professional certification
